The "Poor Man's Porsche" to the uneducated..........

 When the 1st Generation Porsche Boxster was released in 1996, it was generally very well received. The motoring press praised the poise, handling and power delivery of Porsche's entry to the then fairly saturated roadster market. Powered by a 2.5 litre flat-6 mid-mounted engine and producing 204bhp, the Boxster was never going to win any land speed records but, that was never the intention. By 2000, it was already firmly established as the mass produced Porsche, with over 10,000 being produced every year. If anything, the Boxster is a car that turned Porsche into the most profitable car manufacturer in the world.

 As the Boxster was received into the general public, it built momentum as more and more appeared on the roads. Because of this, and the fact that they were significantly cheaper than the then sold offering from Porsche, the 911, they developed the image of being a Porsche that anybody could afford, unaffectionately known as the "Poor Man's Porsche." This was a very harsh title for a car that only earned it because of its mainstream nature. The Boxster was, and still is a fantastic car that is available to the masses from a manufacturer that was used to catering to the rich.

 Fast forward 20 years and, although the Porsche model line-up is much larger than it was in the 90s (it is now made up by 7 different models) and, although the Boxster has moved on leaps and bounds, it still unfortunately has the same stigma attached to it.

I, personally, find this very upsetting, particularly because, in my honest opinion, the Boxster is probably the best car that Porsche make. Launched in 2013, the 3rd Generation (981) model was much lower, wider and had much more aggressive styling than the previous two generations in an attempt to attract a new audience.

 I think the 981 generation Boxster looks absolutely superb. It is very masculine, the curvature gives a very aggressive look from any angle and I love how squat the car looks sitting on the road, low and wide. Offered with either a 2.7 litre engine or a 3.4 litre, the range topping "S" was the one to go for, with a 315BHP 3.4 Flat-6 Engine capable of accelerating to 60mph in sub-5 seconds and on to a top speed of 165MPH. If anything, the 981 generation is the last of the proper Porsches, as they are all now smaller engined and turbocharged and, in the case of the Boxster, 4-Cylinders!

 As with any Porsche, the key is to buy with a high specification. Porsches in general (not just Boxsters) are very sensitive to what optional extras were added when the cars were new. Porsche, as you can imagine, are keen to charge for every little detail. Bluetooth, Sir? Very well, that's £350 please. All of these extras certainly add up and it isn't uncommon to find cars with thousands of pounds worth of extras. These, contrary to what a lot of people will tell you, do make a difference when it comes to resale, as a lot of Porsche owners and potential owners will seek out low mileage high specification examples in desirable colours.
