Everybody loves a supercar. Who wouldn't love the thought of a Ferrari or Lamborghini? The stunning looks, the sound, the raw power, all connote the excitement of exotic metal. The problem is, day-to-day, how is it realistic to own and drive a car that will average 2MPG, costs £15,000 to service every year, leaves you shaking with fear everytime you leave it in a public car park and is so unpractical that you'll struggle to find anywhere to put your spare change. Not forgetting the fact that as a two seater you have to have a spare car on standby for when you have more than one passenger.
Audi, however, throw caution to the wind and re-write the rule book with this, the 560BHP, 4.0 Twin-Turbo RS7 Quattro. Where to even start with the RS7. This thing is quick. And not just in the "nippy" sense, it accelerates with such ferocity I cannot think of a car that is quicker in the real world of speed bumps and pot holes.
The noise, the engine, the raw power make this a true supercar competitor. 0-60MPH according to Audi takes just 3.9 Seconds. This is faster than a Lamborghini Gallardo and only slightly behind a Ferrari 458! In this, a car that can comfortably fit 4 adults and has a huge boot.
The 4.0 V8 Turbo engine packs a massive torque figure, meaning that the power delivery is instant and there is very little in the way of turbo lag. It pulls in any gear, at any revs right the way round to the redline with no fuss whatsoever, it really is effortless.
The Dynamic drive mode really helps to make this a car for any occasion. You can change the settings on the air suspension, steering, throttle response, engine and gearbox and, where applicable when fitted with the sports exhaust, the exhaust note.
Our car, a September 2015 "65" example has covered just 18,000 Miles from new in the hands of one private owner and is in superb condition throughout. As with any high end premium car, specification is very important. Thankfully, the previous owner has also seen the importance of this and has specified it with in excess of £15,000 worth of optional extras. The styling pack includes Aluminium side mirrors, window surrounds, front and rear bumper accents as well as "QUATTRO" in aluminium silver letters on the front grille. All of these understated touches, the 21" wheels, the quad exhausts, the LED matrix headlights all subtly set this car aside from the standard 3.0TDi A7 repmobile.
For me, the most important extras are the sports exhaust and the Dynamic Pack. They transform the car throughout. The noise from the exhaust is addictive, with snaps, crackles, bangs and pops under acceleration, on the overrun and even when changing gear, because why wouldn't you want that? The Dynamic Drive Select allows you to alter every aspect of the drivetrain as well as the engine and exhaust and really puts everything in your hands.
As an all round car, the RS7 really does take some beating. It handles and drives fantastically and is extremely planted. The Quattro Four-Wheel Drive system allows the power to be displaced to the road effortlessly with very little effort. Never have I driven a car that can successfully put 560BHP to tarmac with no wheelspin!
